Real McCoy 3 Year represents Foursquare Distillery’s entry point into the Real McCoy range, delivering a charcoal-filtered aged rum that bridges traditional Caribbean production with modern accessibility. A blend of column and pot still rums aged for three years in ex-bourbon barrels, it is then lightly charcoal filtered stripping most of the golden color from the rum, but leaving some definition in the glass. At 40% ABV, this expression targets both cocktail applications and budget-conscious consumers seeking authentic Barbadian character.

Technical Assessment

Because this is an accurate depiction of Prohibition Era Caribbean rum from Foursquare; there are no added sugar, flavor or artificial coloring. The production methodology maintains Foursquare’s commitment to unadulterated rum creation, though the charcoal filtration process distinguishes it from the distillery’s amber expressions. The charcoal filtration takes out some of what I like in my rums. This technical choice prioritizes visual clarity over color retention from barrel aging.

Nose Evaluation

The aromatic presentation delivers vanilla and banana characteristics consistent with the QA testing observations. You get notes of light banana peel, confectionary sugar, pencil shavings, and macerated pineapple flesh. The nose demonstrates tropical fruit development typical of young Barbadian rum, though because of the young age of this rum, there is an aroma of ethanol on the initial nose. The vanilla and citrus notes documented in testing align with reported characteristics.

Palate Analysis

The palate execution reflects authentic rum character despite youth limitations. There is a lot more flavor going on than you’d expect for a white/silver rum. The profile is strong with juicy pineapple notes upfront. From there the column heavy distillate continues to carry the show with notes of grilled limes, bitter orange pith, and sugar-free butterscotch. The clean vanilla and fruit characteristics documented in testing represent competent technical execution within the young age category.

Finish Assessment

Very short finish represents the primary structural limitation of this three-year expression. The conclusion lacks persistence typical of more mature expressions, though maintains pleasant characteristics through the abbreviated duration. The clean finish documented in testing provides adequate closure without unpleasant interference.

Performance Context

Users find this rum suitable primarily for cocktails, with several appreciating its value and flavor intensity as a mixer. The expression demonstrates competent mixing functionality while maintaining authentic character. For its price point and purpose it may be a tough rum to beat, mind you, but my personal preferences don’t go there. The technical scores reflect adequate performance within its accessible price category.

Final Assessment

Real McCoy 3 Year executes its role as entry-level Foursquare rum with technical competence limited by youth and filtration choices. Definitely another mixing rum from Foursquare, lacking the nuances and complexity of their premium products. The expression provides authentic Barbadian character without artificial enhancement, making it suitable for cocktail applications while serving as an introduction to the Real McCoy range.
