Mount Gay Eclipse represents the entry-level offering from the world’s oldest continuously operating rum distillery, aged up to 2 years in white Kentucky oak ex bourbon barrels. This expression delivers a blend of molasses based Column Still rum and Copper Double Retort Pot Still rum aged for 2-3 years in charred ex-American whiskey casks, establishing itself as a straightforward introduction to the Barbadian style.

Nose: The aromatic presentation opens with coconut and banana notes, supported by vanilla and bourbon like aromas. The nose carries fresh flowers and honey, a little vanilla and tropical fruit, though the overall intensity remains modest. The integration is competent for a young rum, establishing an approachable profile without complexity.

Palate: The entry delivers smooth vanilla and tropical fruits as expected from the test notes. The palate is fruity and well-rounded with notes of banana, vanilla, smoke, toasty oak, spice. The mouthfeel carries adequate weight at 40% ABV, though it’s a little on the thin side. The youthful character dominates without harsh alcohol intrusion, providing a clean foundation that showcases the base spirit.

Finish: The conclusion offers medium length with vanilla and fruit notes lingering briefly. Hints of ginger, leather and tobacco nice drying finish to it. Finish is medium-long with a spicy dry tingling to the lips. The finish maintains the straightforward character established throughout the tasting.

This is competent entry-level Barbadian rum that demonstrates technical proficiency in production and blending. This rum is wonderfully balanced, completely consistent, and with no one element overdone. We lingered and tasted, and the Eclipse kept growing on me, truly enjoyable. However, it lacks the intensity and complexity that would elevate it beyond its intended role as a mixing rum. Considering the price this is most definitely a rum which is best used in cocktails, though it serves as an adequate introduction to the Mount Gay portfolio for those seeking accessible Bajan character.
