Doorly’s XO is a blend of molasses-based pot and column still distillate, first matured in ex-Bourbon casks for 5 years, followed by maturation in Oloroso sherry casks for a period of 1-3 years. This expression from Foursquare distillery represents a sherry-finished offering that demonstrates the distillery’s commitment to technical precision without additives. Although there is no age statement on the bottle, the contents are understood to be no less than six years old, with likely some older rum included.
Nose: The aromatic profile delivers rich vanilla and dried fruit notes. The presentation is classically Bajan with enhanced complexity from the sherry finishing. Nuts emerge alongside the vanilla foundation, establishing a solid but restrained intensity. Palate: The entry presents rich vanilla and orange notes with underlying spice, maintaining the profile established on the nose. The mouthfeel carries adequate weight at 40% ABV, though it trends toward the lighter side. Nutty characteristics develop throughout the tasting, providing complexity without overwhelming the base rum character. The spice component adds warmth without harsh alcohol intrusion. Finish: The conclusion offers long length with vanilla and nutty warmth lingering prominently. The finish maintains consistency with the palate development, providing satisfying persistence without becoming overly dry or tannic.
This is competent Barbadian rum that successfully integrates sherry finishing without masking the base spirit character. The flavor is worthy of a $50 price tag but R.L. Seale and Company chose to charge much less. The technical execution is solid, delivering a serviceable sipper that functions adequately in cocktails as well. However, it lacks the intensity and distinctiveness that would elevate it beyond its intended role as an accessible introduction to sherry-finished rums. The price point makes it reasonable value, though those seeking more complex expressions might find themselves reaching for aged statements or cask strength offerings instead.
