Doorly’s 5 Year Old is a molasses-based blend of pot and column still rums aged for 5 years in ex-bourbon barrels, representing the entry-level aged offering from Foursquare distillery’s respected Doorly’s brand. Bottled at 40% ABV without added sweeteners or additives, this expression establishes itself as a straightforward introduction to authentic Barbadian rum character.
Nose: The aromatic presentation delivers competent results within expected parameters. The signature coconut flavor emerges along with some wood spices, while vanilla, a little citrus, and light oak aging form a nicely balanced foundation. The integration is solid for a young rum, establishing an approachable profile without complexity or intensity.
Palate: The entry provides smooth vanilla and tropical fruit notes as anticipated from the test results. The rum is surprisingly smooth for such a low-priced expression, delivering adequate weight at 40% ABV though remaining somewhat thin. The youthful character dominates without harsh alcohol intrusion, providing a clean foundation that showcases the base spirit characteristics.
Finish: The conclusion offers medium length with vanilla and warming notes lingering briefly. A honey/banana aftertaste emerges, maintaining the straightforward character established throughout the tasting. The finish provides adequate closure without extending into complexity.
This is competent entry-level Barbadian rum that demonstrates technical proficiency in production and blending. At £20 it functions as a good little sipper, though it lacks intensity and complexity that would elevate it beyond its intended role as an accessible introduction to the Foursquare portfolio. It’s not out of this world and doesn’t offer huge complexity or much of a challenge but it’s good. The price point makes it serviceable for both neat consumption and mixing applications, establishing value within its category limitations.
