Doorly’s 12 Year Old is a molasses-based blend of pot and column still rums aged for 12 years, with 90% aged in ex-bourbon barrels and 10% aged in Madeira casks. This expression from Foursquare distillery in Barbados represents a mature offering from a brand that has become increasingly respected for its no-additives approach.

Nose: The aromatic profile presents itself as classically Bajan with more chocolate and toffee notes than younger expressions, plus significantly more oak influence. Red apples, Luxardo cherries, rich tobacco, dried apricots, and dark chocolate form the foundation, while fortified wine notes contribute banana and rich dried fruits. The integration is solid, though the overall intensity remains restrained.

Palate: The palate presents as quite dry, which distinguishes it from sweeter Caribbean expressions. Rich tropical and dried fruit flavors deliver with a huge hit of banana and caramel. The mouthfeel carries adequate weight without being heavy, and the 43% ABV provides sufficient backbone without harsh alcohol intrusion.

Finish: The conclusion offers dry and complex characteristics with moderate length. Oak influence becomes more pronounced here, maintaining the drier profile established on the palate.

This is competent Barbadian rum that demonstrates technical proficiency without breaking new ground. It’s a well-made, serviceable rum that works neat or in cocktails, with 12 years of aging providing subtleties and interesting flavors. However, it lacks panache, style, and intensity that would elevate it to exceptional status. The price point makes it accessible, but those seeking the full potential of Foursquare’s capabilities might find themselves reaching for their Exceptional Cask series instead.
